Going Green For An Ice Cream Maker

I remember the hot days in East Texas when my family sat out on the front porch and hand-cranked the ice cream.  The ice cream was made from eggs from our chickens and peaches from our trees on the farm.  We all took turns turning that crank and sprinkling rock salt on the ice.

With that memory in mind I am attempting to find a hand-cranked ice cream maker so that my kids will learn more patience and appreciation for the old ways.  Plus, since the churn would be manual I am also going green.  You know, reducing my family’s dependence on foreign oil by buying a hand-cranked ice machine.

I checked Amazon.com and I found serveral machines starting at $70.00.  How can the machine be that much and not be electric.  It is just a bucket and a bicycle wheel.  Why are they so expensive?!

What!  You are kidding me.   I checked the reviews on that ice cream ball and as I thought they were pretty much negative.

There is also a dual ice cream maker at Target for $50.00 which includes the hand crank and the electric cord.  The price still seems kind of high.

You can also find a churn at a store that caters to the Amish:  http://www.lehmans.com/jump.jsp?itemType=CATEGORY&itemID=670&iMainCat=670&iSubCat=670

Maybe the government ought to consider some type of subsidy for ice cream makers.

  1. Well that is just totally backwards isn’t it ? – that the hand crank ones cost more than the electric version?
I’d like to have one too. My boys just have no idea how much work goes into ice cream. I think they’d appreciate it so much more if there was a little elbow grease in the recipe :-)
